چکیده

We present a method for rendering single-bounce indirect illumination in real time on currently available graphics hardware. The method is based on the instant radiosity algorithm, where virtual point lights (VPLs) are generated by casting rays from the primary light source. Hardware shadow maps are then employed for determining the indirect illumination from the VPLs. Our main contribution is an algorithm for reusing the VPLs and incrementally maintaining their good distribution. As a result, only a few shadow maps need to be rendered per frame as long as the motion of the primary light source is reasonably smooth. This yields real-time frame rates even when hundreds

Real-time Indirect Illumination with Clustered Visibility

Visibility computation is often the bottleneck when rendering indirect illumination. However, recent methods based on instant radiosity have demonstrated that accurate visibility is not required for indirect illumination. To exploit this insight, we cluster a large number of virtual point lights – which represent the indirect illumination when using instant radiosity – into a small number of vi...

Instant Caching for Interactive Global Illumination

The ability to interactively render dynamic scenes with global illumination is one of the main challenges in computer graphics. The improvement in performance of interactive ray tracing brought about by significant advances in hardware and careful exploitation of coherence has rendered the potential of interactive global illumination a reality. However, the simulation of complex light transport...

Hierarchical Image-Space Radiosity for Interactive Global Illumination

We introduce image-space radiosity and a hierarchical variant as a method for interactively approximating diffuse indirect illumination in fully dynamic scenes. As oft observed, diffuse indirect illumination contains mainly low-frequency details that do not require independent computations at every pixel. Prior work leverages this to reduce computation costs by clustering and caching samples in...

Reciprocal shading for mixed reality

Reciprocal shading for mixed reality aims to integrate virtual objects into real environments in a way that they are in the ideal case indistinguishable from real objects. It is therefore an attractive technology for architectural visualizations, product visualizations and for cultural heritage sites, where virtual objects should be seamlessly merged with real ones. Due to the improved performa...

Instant Multiple Scattering for Interactive Rendering of Heterogeneous Participating Media

Rendering participating media with multiple scattering is costly and often even challenging for off-line methods. In this paper we present a novel method for efficiently rendering such effects that achieves interactive speed for dynamic scenes with both homogeneous and heterogeneous media. It is based on instant radiosity, which is typically used to approximate indirect illumination between sur...
